We sincerely thank Woody Wheeler, neighbor and bird guide, for leading three bird walks this year. The waitlist was so long for the first two bird walks, we added a third and hosted a total of 38 people!
Ravenna and Cowen Parks provide important habitat and a true oasis for birds in the City. Over the course of the three walks, we saw 28 species. This included four different types of woodpeckers: the Pileated Woodpecker (the largest woodpecker in North America), the Hairy Woodpecker, the Northern Flicker and the Downy Woodpecker. A variety of sparrows, warblers, wrens and flycatchers were also sighted and heard. We enjoyed good looks at the Barred Owl and Cooper’s Hawk who nest in the ravine.
